York Co. lawmaker files bill to ban Confederate flag from SC public buildings

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A York County lawmaker has filed a bill to ban the Confederate flag in any South Carolina public building, including the county's courthouse.

Currently, a state law called the Heritage Act protects the flag from being removed without legislative approval.

Channel 9's partners at The Herald report that lawmaker John King filed the bill to ban the flag after an ongoing controversy about it in the York County Courthouse.

In 2015, South Carolina lawmakers removed the Confederate battle flag from the statehouse grounds. That move came after pictures surfaced showing the Charleston church shooter, Dylann Roof, posing with the flag.
