Mallard Creek cracks top 10 in national football ranking

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The Mallard Creek Mavericks are having a dream season and it only gets better each and every week.

The Mavericks have been nationally recognized all season and now have cracked the top 10 in Sports Illustrated's national high school football power rankings.

Mallard Creek (13-0) moved up one spot to No. 10 with a easy win over Myers Park on Friday night.

The Mavericks rang up 35 points during a nine-play span in the second half, putting the game out of reach.

2011 Channel 9 "Big 22" player of the year candidate Jela Duncan rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns in Friday's win.

The Mavericks will travel to Greensboro Page on Friday night for a chance to play for the state championship. Page came from behind to beat Butler, the two-time defending 4AA state champions, 40-26, eliminating any chance of a rivalry renewal between the Bulldogs and the Mavericks.

Gaffney, S.C., is ranked No. 3 in SI's power rankings. Gaffney (13-0) moved up one spot after defeating Dorman 33-3 Friday night. Gaffney will play Boiling Springs Friday night for a chance to play for the state title.
