Police ID man killed in York Co. hit-and-run

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Police said a body was found in the middle of a York County road after an apparent hit-and-run Saturday morning.

Police identified the victim as 50-year-old William Hayes.

The Herald in Rock Hill reported Sunday that Hayes was on his way home from his sister’s home when he was killed.

Someone called 911 around 4:48 a.m. Saturday, saying they saw someone lying in the roadway on New Street between Hill and Congress streets. When officers arrived on the scene, they saw Hayes  on the ground not breathing.

According to a release, EMS responded to the call and pronounced him dead.

York County's forensics unit and York County Coroner's Office were also notified of the incident and were on the scene.
