New NC Mountain Wine Trail Aims To Attract Wine Enthusiasts

BOONE, N.C.,None — Some North Carolina mountain communities have come up with a new plan to attract wine lovers to help boost the economy.

The Watauga Tourism Development Authority helped develop the Boone Area Wine Trail.

The loop connects visitors with several wineries and places to stay around Boone and Banner Elk.

The first leg of the trip takes visitors through the Watauga River Valley to the Grandfather Vineyard and Winery.

The wine processing building and tasting room sit beside the rushing river, a pristine trout stream that dances down from the towering peaks and famous profile face of Grandfather Mountain.

The second leg of the trip takes visitors to the Banner Elk Winery And Inn where they can relax on the expansive tasting room porch overlooking the boulder-bordered pond.

The last leg of the trip goes down a winding, descending, scenic byway to Valle Crucis to the 1861 Farmhouse Restaurant and Winery.

Located across the road from the Mast General Store, the historic Farmhouse Restaurant and Winery dates to 1855 and features a large appetizer menu to accompany wine tastings. The new winery opened in late May.
