CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. —
State troopers said a male cyclist and a female passenger were thrown from the bike after colliding with a pickup truck near the intersection of Highway 10 and Bethany Church Road.
Derek Coley was at the Country Market store when the crash happened. He said the rider was going more than 100 mph when it hit the truck, which was turning into the store’s parking lot.
“The truck is right here and when he turned, I didn't see them until they came over the hill and it was about that time when they hit him,” Coley said. “They were doing at least a 100 and something.”
Troopers haven’t yet determined the exact speed, but said the rider was traveling well above the speed limit.
“People get on these motorcycles and go way too fast and this is an example of somebody can get hurt very bad, if not killed,” Corey Trouille, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, said.
Tyler Bynum, who witnessed the crash, said she was shocked by what he saw.
“I had no idea what to think…. I didn't know what to do,” she said.
Troopers said the driver of the truck never saw the motorcycle. There is a small hill near the intersection, making it difficult to see.
Still, troopers said they think speed caused the crash.
Both people on the motorcycle were wearing helmets, troopers said. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
