Last summer, someone showed up at Payne's house selling magazines. They had a story to tell that convinced the woman to buy. Now, Payne feels she was a victim.
Tonda Payne home-schools her two daughters. She occasionally uses magazines with her lessons. Last summer, someone came to her door selling magazines.
The woman at the door told Payne she was selling magazines to support her child. So Payne pulled out her checkbook.
"I ordered two magazines. The Craftworks and The Good House Keeping and I gave her a check and she gave me a receipt and she went on her way," she said. "They wasted no time cashing my check."
Payne never got the magazines.
"[It's been] over 200 days. The delivery on the receipt said 90 to 120 days. This order was back in June of 2004," she said.
The name of the company on Payne's receipt is American Training Solutions with a Newell Post box, which is in the University Area. She called asking for her money back.
"Then I said, 'Just give me a refund' and they one time told me I'd get it in three to five business days and I never received the check and then that's when I contacted you," said Payne.
Action 9 spoke to the Better Business Bureau and found out the company has 67 complaints that include misleading selling practices.
After Action 9 wrote to American Training Solution, it sent Payne a money order.
Before you buy from a stranger going door to door, ask to see identification and their selling permit issued by the city. And finally, check out their business with the BBB.
