Arrest Made In West Charlotte Kidnapping, Carjacking

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Police in Charlotte have arrested a man they say kidnapped and carjacked a woman in west Charlotte early Sunday morning.

Terry Funderburk is in the Mecklenburg County jail. Police say he used a gun to kidnap and carjack 20-year-old Katie Rhodes at the Raceway gas station on Brookshire Boulevard.

Investigators say Funderburk pushed Rhodes into the passenger seat, jumped behind the wheel, and drove off with her in the car for roughly one hour.

Rhodes said, "It happened really fast and I didn't even think to get out of the car on the other side, you know, I was in shock."

She doesn't know what he wanted or what was going to happen to her. She said, "I was asking him, 'Why?' and stuff, but, he wouldn't answer."

Finally, somewhere around Tuckaseegee Road, the suspect told Rhodes to get out of the car. She says she didn't know what came over her, but she punched the man before escaping. Apparently, he hit her with the gun, making her lip bleed.

Rhodes says she ran to the closest house she saw. People there called for help and Rhodes went to the hospital.

Police arrested Funderburk and recovered her car soon after.

Funderburk is charged with assault on a female, kidnapping and probation violation.
