Charlotte-Area Soldier Killed In Iraq Days After End Of U.S. Combat Operations

CONCORD, N.C. —

Friends gathered Wednesday night at a church in Concord to mourn the loss of Pfc. James McClamrock, one of the first U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq after President Barack Obama declared an end to combat operations.

Songs and prayers filled Concord ARP Church, where McClamrock's father serves as pastor.

McClamrock was one of two soldiers killed Monday when a man wearing an Iraqi Army uniform opened fire on U.S. troops. Nine others were wounded.

"James had just a really good heart," said Gray Cougar, a family friend. "He really loved the Lord and he believed that he was doing what the Lord had called him to do."

The family headed to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Wednesday night to receive McClamrock's body and bring it home for a funeral. They were notified Tuesday night of McClamrock's death.

"Their faith is what's getting them through right now in a very difficult situation," Cougar said.

Family members showed Channel 9 a letter the soldier had just sent home to his little sister, asking how she was doing and joking with her.

"He was outgoing and he was funny," said Cougar. He loved comedy and jokes, and he was always light-hearted and fun."

McClamrock had been in Iraq only six weeks.

He leaves behind his wife of two years.
