Charlotte Leaders Back Plan For Higher Transit Tax

Charlotte city leaders are pursuing another half cent sales tax for mass transit.

City council voted Monday night to urge Mecklenburg County commissioners to consider the option. Commissioners could request to add Mecklenburg County to a state bill. Then voters would have the final say in a referendum on another transit tax.

One voter, Faith Hemenway, wouldn't mind. She said, "Yes, yes, I love [mass transit]."

But dozens of protestors tried to pressure local leaders to drop the idea Monday night.

Tariq Bokhari said, "This is not the time for increasing taxes or setting in motion a plan to increase taxes."

Protestors said they are also afraid if local leaders get the chance to raise taxes they will not be able to resist.

Craig Nannini said, "I buy tools. But I've never yet put a tool in my toolbox I didn't plan on using."

In some ways, the city's move is symbolic. Mecklenburg County leaders would have to put the item on the ballot. They haven't decided if they want to pursue it.
