CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Police arrested Ester Flores, 20, on Monday. Investigators say they found her baby girl, Esmerelda Garcia Flores, dead inside a home on Blythe Ridge Court on Saturday.
Authorities said the infant was born inside the house and died on the same day. They won’t say how the child died, how long she was alive or why they suspect her mother killed her.
Flores is charged with murder and is being held at the Mecklenburg County jail.
Flores, who does not speak English, was given an interpreter in court on Tuesday. She asked the judge through the interpreter if she would be given bond, but the judge denied it. He set a bond hearing for June 4. Her next appearance in court was also set for June 11.
Three family members who were in the courtroom declined to speak with Eyewitness News.
Those who live near the townhome that Flores shared with her parents said they are shocked by the charges.
“Kind of surprising,” said Scott Moffat. “But I’m trying not to formulate my own opinions until I talk to them about it.”
