Charlotte Neighborhood Worries Their Homes Are A 'Hot Spot' For Thieves

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are warning homeowners in Southeast Charlotte to be on alert after a string of break-ins in the area off Sardis Road.

Thieves kicked in the front door and burglarized John McPhaul's home Tuesday morning. "I think if someone wants into your home; I mean locks just keep an honest person out," he said.

McPhaul works from home and police say the thieves were probably waiting on him to leave. They sent out an email alert warning homeowners to be on the look out for three to four black males in a Dodge minivan who police said are the suspects in several of the break-ins.

While neighbors said they have an active neighborhood watch, McPhaul says you can always do more. "I think this was just an instance where it was an opportunity and we're just gonna have to be more vigilant," he said.

A vigilance Jessica Otto, who started the community watch, believes comes from knowing your neighbors. "I think it adds some value and richness to your life to know the people you live around," said Otto. "Especially in this situation like this it makes you feel more secure."

Police said they have arrested a couple of suspects, but believe there are more involved.
