CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The police chief said he does not think that officer had his blue lights or his sirens on. It happened Sunday night on Old Statesville Road between Sunset and Lakeview.
Police chief Rodney Monroe said he can't find a reason why Officer Martray Proctor would have been driving twice the speed limit and doing it appears without his lights or sirens on.
Sunday night, Officer Proctor was was on his way to assist another officer at a routine traffic stop.
"There were no indications of imminent trouble in that particular traffic stop," Monroe said.
Officer Proctor, who's been with CMPD for two years, collided with a car driven by Shatona Robinson. She died. The three passengers in her car survived.
People who live nearby Old Statesville Road and Henderson Circle knew immediately it was a bad wreck, just from the noise.
"I heard the loud noise of a car racing up the road, and the impact, that'll all I heard," said Tommy Shackelford.
Chief Monroe said Officer Proctor was going more than 90 miles an hour. A full investigation is now underway where they'll no only determine an exact speed, but whether the officer could face charges.
"It won't be treated any differently because a police officer is involved," said Monroe.
Monday, city workers replaced the sign taken out by the officer.
Officer Proctor is still in the hospital, with a broken leg. The chief wouldn't say if he's be put on administrative leave or not.
It'll be up to the District Attorney's Office to decide if charges will be filed. CMPD officials said the investigation will take at least a week to complete, and then it'll be handed over to the DA.
