Child Hit In Front Of Southwest Charlotte Elementary School

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A 5-year-old child is in the hospital after being hit by a car in front of Nations Ford Elementary School. The driver of the car has also been hospitalized.

Police said around 7 a.m. Wednesday as students were arriving for school, a driver hit a little girl on Nations Ford Road between Archdale Drive and Arrowood Road. They said the driver then swerved to avoid hitting another car, and ended up down an embankment.

Officers say they aren’t sure if the child was hit while walking across the crosswalk, but they believe she darted into traffic.

She is currently in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center. Authorities say her injuries are not life-threatening.

Investigators also say the driver suffered a seizure during the accident and had to be transported to the hospital. That person has not been charged.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said a crossing guard was outside the school when the accident happened. They also said the school principal has been at the hospital with the child and her relatives. The principal plans to see if any changes need to be made.
