CMS Addresses AP Class Gap Between Schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Some CMS students have a harder road to college, because there aren't as many Advanced Placement class available for them.

A report presented to the school board, revealed some high school schools like, South Mecklenburg High School, have more than three times as many AP classes than some other high schools.

The gap is mostly between high poverty schools and low poverty schools, and leveling the playing field might be difficult.

As district leaders get ready to tackle another tough budget season, they've already been told to consider the option of getting rid of some elective classes, like AP courses.

"We're going to have to look for more creative solutions and offer more selections to our students in a more effective way. Exactly how we do that; that's the work we have ahead of us," said Eric Davis, Chairman of the CMS Board of Education.

Another budget option being discussed is increasing class sizes.
