Counselors Help Catawba Co. Students Grieve Boy Killed In Crash

NEWTON, N.C. —

Extra counselors were on hand at an elementary school in Catawba County on Thursday morning after a crash killed an 11-year-old student and two women.

The school district said the counselors were brought in to help students at Catawba Elementary School grieve after Cody Storey died Wednesday.

Also killed in the crash were the driver, 56-year old Joyce White, and her passenger, Ruby Leatherman.

State troopers said White ran a flashing red light at the intersection of Highway 10 and Highway 16 and into the path of a tractor trailer.

Two brothers, 10-year old Isaiah and 12-year old Tyler Trivette, were also in the car and are at Carolinas Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

All of the boys attended Catawba Elementary, which sent a letter home to parents about the crash.
