County, School Board Discuss How Construction Dollars To Be Allocated

Mecklenburg County commissioners reminded Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board members they're not the only ones asking for construction dollars.

The two groups held a rare joint session Tuesday afternoon. County commissioners are trying to figure out how to divide money for building projects.

CMS leaders said they’ll need $2.4 billion worth of projects over the next few years.

Mike Rabile, who works in CMS's auxillary services department said, "I'm afraid we're in the trailer park business again."

But the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, libraries and Central Piedmont Community College have wish lists of their own.

"We have to balance you against all these other departments," said County Commissioner Bill James.

County commissioner Vilma Leake asked, "How do we fairly meet the needs of all of these situations in our county? How do we do it?"

County commissioners plan to discuss the plans without the school board next month. They hope to make some commitments by the end of December.
