Deliberations Underway In Midland Mother's Murder Trial; Jurors Ask To See Exhibits

CONCORD, N.C. —

A mother accused of killing her two young children by setting the family’s Midland home on fire could learn her fate early next week.

The jury in the Lisa Greene murder trial started deliberating around 11 a.m. Friday and asked to be dismissed for the weekend at 4 p.m.

Prosecutors said Greene set her home on fire in January 2006, leaving her children inside to die, but the defense argued that a candle tipped over in the children’s room and Greene was unable to save them from the flames.

The jury has a long list of possible charges to consider in the case. Greene can be found guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or involuntary manslaughter, or she could be found not guilty.

Jurors have more than seven weeks of testimony to consider, along with an alleged confession. The prosecution said Greene told investigators she would tell them what really happened and then confessed shortly after the fire, but the defense said investigators cornered her and forced her to confess.

Fire experts testified for both sides during the trial, and the defense used emotional testimony from Greene’s family while prosecutors portrayed Greene as a woman who hated her children with witness testimony.

Late Friday jurors asked to see 10-year-old Daniel’s clothing, an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms test packet, autopsy results on the children and a master list of all the exhibits. They said they may also want to hear the 911 call made during the fire and see forensic evidence when they continue deliberating.

Greene could get the death penalty if convicted. If she is found guilty, a gag order will remain in place until the sentencing.

WSOCTV.com will have live video as the verdict is handed down.
