Deputies Arrest Man Wanted In 2-State Crime Spree

YORK COUNTY, S.C. —

The man wanted in connection with a crime spree that spanned two states and at least 18 months has been arrested.

Douglas Scott Hefner was arrested Wednesday. He was was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants from the York County Sheriff's Office and other jurisdictions.

Hefner was trying to sell video games to a Game Stop location in Greenville, S.C., when he was arrested, the York County Sheriff’s Office said. About $60,000 in stolen merchandise was recovered during his arrest, investigators said. Some of it had been reported stolen from multiple Game Stop stores.

Hefner’s 18-year-old son, Shawn Hefner, was arrested earlier this month, along with 29-year-old Thomas Barr. Deputies said the three men are responsible for the theft of eight cars and a dozen business break-ins in North and South Carolina since fall 2009.

Angela Barr, 21, was also arrested in connection with the investigation.

Douglas Hefner is charged with five counts of chop shop/altering, destroying or disguising a vehicle ID number and five counts of a property offense – third or subsequent. The Sheriff’s Office said more charges are pending.

Shawn Hefner is charged with four counts of chop shop/altering, destroying or disguising a vehicle ID number, four counts of receiving stolen goods and two counts of being a fugitive from justice.

Thomas Barr is charged with grand larceny, burglary, three counts of receiving stolen goods, three counts of chop shop/altering, destroying or disguising a vehicle ID number, criminal conspiracy and being a fugitive from justice.

Angela Barr is charged with three counts of chop shop/altering, destroying or disguising a vehicle ID number and three counts of receiving stolen goods.

All three men are being held at the York County Detention Center. Angela Barr was released on bond.
