YORK COUNTY, S.C. —
Gaston County investigators said they got new information from interviews conducted in the last week.
“We had this come in as a lead to where we might find some possible evidence,” said Capt. Calvin Shaw of the Gaston County Police Department.
He would not say where the information came from or what specifically divers were looking for, but he said the evidence would shed light on the murder investigation.
The divers scoured the water off the Allison Creek Boat Landing in York County, not far from the home of one of Lucy Johnson’s ex-boyfriends.
Johnson’s remains were found in her burning home on Hidden Meadow Court on July 16. Her two children, 7-year-old Lauren and 6-month-old Cason, were staying with their respective fathers at the time. Johnson was four months pregnant with her third child.
Investigators have said they believe the fire was set. They have not released Johnson’s cause of death.
Family members said Johnson, a 31-year-old nurse at Kings Mountain Hospital, was in a heated custody battle with the father of one of her children – the man who lives near Allison Creek Boat Landing. Johnson had an order of protection taken out on the man, but he has not been named a suspect in her death.
Shaw called the location a coincidence.
“I wouldn't read anything into that. Right now, they are just looking for evidence,” he said.
Divers said searching for evidence in the water is a tedious task. They said the water is 20 feet deep and pitch black at the bottom. They ran across a lot of old Christmas trees, fish and manmade objects on the bottom of the lake, but they didn’t find what they were looking for.
Both children remain in the care of their fathers. A Cleveland County paramedic is organizing a benefit concert for the children to be held in August or September.
