CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Two Charlotte men helped a couple being attacked by their pit bull early Thursday.

Witnesses said they saw a woman being bit on the elbow on Esther Lane. They said moments later a man came out of the home, already bleeding from an apparent attack.

Two men grabbed pieces of wood and a broom to fight off the dog.

"There was no choice," Jeff Frost said, who used the piece of wood. "They were screaming for help, and someone had to come to the rescue."

The couple went to a local hospital. Police caught the dog after searching for nearly two hours.

The dog was taken away to be put down.
