CMS Closely Inspecting Magnet Programs

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders recommend the district eliminate a few magnet programs.

Several school board members and CMS staff met Tuesday to discuss the future of magnets in the district.

One recommendation from staff is to get rid of the open magnets at Piedmont Open Middle, Irwin Avenue Elementary, Randolph Middle and West Charlotte High School.

"Right now, we're not sure the program is doing exactly as it was intended when it was put in place in the 1970s," said CMS Superintendent Peter Gorman.

Staff is also proposing to eliminate the communication arts magnet program in J.T. Williams Middle and Hornet's Nest Elementary School as well.

One school could be added.

By the start of the 2009 school year, CMS would like to add a Montessori middle school.

There will be one more workshop session and parents will have several chances to voice their opinion as well.

Community input meetings will be held through July and early August.
