Fantasia doesn't take her life for granted.
"Life is blessed. Life is good," she said.
On a recent break from promoting her new CD, she let Eyewitness News in on her life out of the spotlight in south Charlotte.
The American Idol star recently bought the home, which is still barely decorated except for her awards.
Her mom, Diane, stays there most of the time while Fantasia hits the road.
Fantasia, 20, said that coming home is a nice change of pace.
"Why do you live here in Charlotte?" asked reporter Blair Miller.
"Ha! I used to live here a long time ago when I was little. I hated it and my mom loved it," said Fantasia
She lived in Charlotte for only a few years. Fantasia finished the ninth grade at East Mecklenburg High School, where she said she had few friends.
Her family moved back to High Point, until just recently.
"Do you think you will always have roots here in Charlotte?" asked Miller.
"Yeah, it's always good for me to...Somebody asked me, 'Do you think you'll ever move to LA?' I said 'No,'" said Fantasia.
"Because naturally people would think you'd live in L.A. or New York," said Miller.
"Yeah, home for me is good. It keeps me humble," she said.
"Are you able to do stuff? Do you go to the grocery? Do you go to Target or Wal-Mart?" asked Miller.
"Yeah, I still go to Target. I love Target," she said.
When Fantasia isn't performing or trying to get her name out, she's with her 3-year-old daughter, Zion.
She acknowledges the criticism she's faced, being a single mother.
"I'm going to say, 'I caught a little hell for being a young mom.' People would say, 'She can't be an Idol. She can't go anywhere. She can't do anything. She's a mom,'" said Fantasia. "I was a kid myself. But I had to push all of that to the side and I had to grow up."
Fantasia doesn't regret her past. She believes it has prepared her for the future and her moment in the spotlight.
She believes it will be more than just 15 minutes of fame.
Fantasia said she plans to eventually send her daughter to public schools in Charlotte. She said she wants her daughter to grow up in an environment with other kids and not hidden from the public.
Wednesday at 10 p.m., ABC News will air an investigation into the TV program American Idol.
In it, a former Idol contestant will tell Primetime Live that one of the judges, Paula Abdul, helped him select the songs he would sing.
The contestant will go on to say he had a sexual relationship with Abdul.
