Family Members Killed In Crash Set To Be Sent To Mexico

STATESVILLE, N.C. —

The bodies of five family members killed in a crash just outside of Statesville will be sent to Mexico on Saturday.

Five members of the Lopez-Sosa family, ranging in age from 11 months to 41 years, died Sunday when their car ran off U.S. 70 and overturned in a creek at the bottom of an embankment.

Police believe the driver, Arturo Lopez, was driving too fast for the rain-soaked road. The North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to check out the road to see if anything can be done to make it safer.

One son, 13-year-old Erick, is the only survivor of the Lopez-Sosa family. He did not go on the trip to pick up party supplies for the baby’s first birthday.

The community has come together to raise money for the burials. Members of a local catholic church said they’ve raised $4,000 so far.

A service is planned for the family Wednesday evening.
