GASTONIA, N.C. —

A saddened family walked away from the Gaston County Courthouse arm in arm Monday morning. The woman charged with killing Ronnie Eudy, their loved one, never entered court.

Eudy's wife said they were expecting Charla Davis to take a plea, but they will be back when she returns to court on Nov.3.

"He's worth it," said Tammy Eudy. "He is worth every trip we make up here."

In early August, the 40-year-old trucker stopped to help a group of people on the U.S. 74 bridge over the Catawba River in Belmont. Police said Davis, who had four prior charges of driving while impaired and one pending, was under the influence again when she drove up. They said she hit the group, injuring three people and killing Ronnie Eudy.

His mother, Mary Ferrell, said, "He was my only son. I'll never have another one."

Davis had a scheduled arraignment Monday on several charges, including second-degree murder, two counts of felony hit-and-run, wreckless driving, driving without a license and driving while impaired. Instead, her attorney was granted more time to review discovery items in the case.

Ronnie Eudy's father said he was hoping she would come to court and opt for a jury trial.

"She would have to go to trial," said Ralph Ferrell. "That way she would get more time than she would get if she had to take a plea bargain."

There has been no public discussion on a plea agreement. Ronnie Eudy's family said they will be at the next hearing in case one is offered to Davis.

Tammy Eudy said, “(Ronnie) would say, ‘Keep going. You are doing right and don't ever give up the fight.’”
