Fiancé Charged In Pregnant Woman's Murder

GASTONIA, N.C. —

Gaston County police have charged a man with arson and murder in the death of his pregnant fianceé, whose body was found after her home was set on fire last July.

Firefighters found Lucy Johnson’s body inside her burning home on Hidden Meadow Court on July 16, 2008. A medical examiner determined she had been killed by two gunshots to her head. Fire investigators said her house had been set on fire.

Johnson, who had two children from previous relationships, was engaged to Michael Mead, 39, of Fort Mill and was pregnant with his child. Johnson’s children were with their fathers the night she was killed.

Friday afternoon, Gaston County police arrested Mead and charged him with first-degree murder, first-degree arson and first-degree burglary.

Eyewitness News spoke to Johnson's neighbor, Martha Winkles.

She said she first suspected mead when he seemed a little too interested in what she knew about the case.

"He just asked me if I was sure that I hadn't seen or heard anything than what I reported to the police."

Winkles said Mead's arrest confirmed her suspicions.

"I know you're innocent until proven guilty, but I feel like justice has been served,” she said.

Mead is being held in the Gaston County Jail without bond.
