Fire And Explosions Rock Albemarle

ALBEMARLE, N.C. —

Fire and explosions rocked parts of Albemarle on Wednesday night. The fire started in a dumpster on Willow Street about 7 p.m. and spread to a metal recycling company.

Firefighters told Channel 9 Eyewitness News that two oxygen tanks exploded inside the dumpster. Several drivers reported the explosions shook their cars as they drove by.

Police office closed down railroad tracks nearby because of vibrations from the blast.

Firefighters said they did not know which came first--the fire or the explosions. But the flames spread to a metal building at the A.L. Lowder Company next door.

There were no reports of injuries late Wednesday evening.
