Former Rescue Squad Recruiter Accused Of Molesting Burke County Boys

MORGANTON, N.C. —

Authorities charged a former Eastern Burke County Rescue Squad recruiter with statutory sex offense on Thursday.

Richard Murphy is accused of having sexual relations with boys he tried to recruit.

Valdese police and the State Bureau of Investigation have been investigating the allegations made by boys, ages 13 to 16, since 2004. Authorities said shortly after the investigation began, Murphy moved out to the coast and changed his name to Trevor Dale Fury.

Authorities said Murphy ran the junior membership for the rescue squad and recruited at area schools. Investigators said he molested at least five children.

Murphy is still in Kill Devil Hills. Burke County authorities plan to bring him to Morganton on Thursday evening.
