DAVIDSON, N.C. —
A woman inside made it out safely, but the house was destroyed.
Fire officials said around 9:30 a.m., workers were digging just outside the Delberg Street home when they struck a gas line. Firefighters don’t know exactly what caused the gas line to catch fire, setting the house ablaze.
The homeowners’ niece, who was house-sitting while the couple is out of town, had to rush out of the burning home with their two dogs. She said they were rebuilding the fence because one of the dogs was jumping over the old fence into the neighbors’ yards.
Neighbors said the fire spread very quickly. Smoke filtered through the neighborhood trees and the heat melted the siding on neighboring homes.
Any time anyone in North Carolina plans to dig, they should call North Carolina’s One Call Center. That center sends out crews, which contact local utilities to find out where lines are, and then use special sensors to find lines and mark them. Visit the N.C. One Call Center for more information.
