CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
GMAC announced the cuts will come from two of its companies in the Queen City.
The ResCap mortgage office in SouthPark is closing, eliminating 44 jobs.
The Charlotte office of the auto loan company Semperian will cut 71 positions.
On Wednesday, GMAC officials said they were mainly call center jobs.
The news of job cuts is a stark contrast from less than a year ago.
"There's no better place to be than in the Queen City, as we all know," GMAC official Pat Raney said last March. That’s when GMAC officials announced the intention of bringing 200 corporate jobs to Uptown.
Gov. Bev Perdue even came to Charlotte to cheer the company on for bringing jobs that pay nearly $100,000 per year.
On Wednesday, GMAC officials said they are still committed to bringing those jobs to Charlotte. The announcement of the 200 jobs came with tax incentives from the city, Mecklenburg county and state of North Carolina.
The Chair of the County Commission, Jennifer Roberts, said she will look into the terms of the deal. Roberts said the incentives act like a reward, and that the company will only get them if they prove they've lived up to the deal and brought jobs to Charlotte.
