GOP Leaders Seeking Cabarrus County Commissioner's Resignation

CONCORD, N.C. —

Cabarrus County Republican leaders are asking county Commissioner Coy Privette to resign after he pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting prostitution.

Prosecutors say the 72-year-old Privette paid a woman for sex a total of six times in May and June. Privette is a former state legislator and a retired pastor.

Commission Chairman Bob Carruth says he was told about the GOP committee decision after the meeting last night. Privette tells The Charlotte Observer he will decide what to do after he hears from the committee.

Carruth says he also has asked Privette to resign. But the decision to step down is solely in Privette's hands because the county commission and GOP committee can't force it.
