Holiday Drivers Face Extra Traffic, More Police Patrols

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Holiday drivers faced bumper to bumper traffic on interstates near Charlotte Sunday.

Wrecks in both directions of Interstate 85 near Concord caused major back-ups. Drivers were not alone on the interstates.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said every available trooper in Mecklenburg County was on the road Sunday for one of the busiest travel days of the year.

"I'm out looking for any violations," Trooper C.J. White said. Eyewitness News joined state troopers as they patrolled interstates 77 and 85.

With our crew in the car, it took White less than two minutes to pull over a speeder. The driver was from Virginia, and White said many of the vehicles on the road were on their way home, passing through North Carolina.

White was one of many troopers driving on random patrol. He said it allows them to cover more ground than running a stationary radar.

Troopers were also looking for people who were texting while driving. They said it's already considered reckless, but starting Tuesday in North Carolina, it will mean a $100 fine if you're caught.
