Law Meant To Be Tough On Illegal Immigrants Also Hindering N.C. Citizens

The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is trying to get the word out about some changes that could hinder your ability to register your vehicle.

"The new law calls for someone coming to register their vehicle either to have a Carolina driver's license or a North Carolina ID," said DMV Manager Donna Mancus.

The new law went into effect September 15. It was originally created to make it tougher for illegal immigrants using foreign ID's to register cars.

But DMV officials say the changes are also affecting many people born and raised in this country, people just like Peter Signh who just moved to Charlotte from Salt Lake City, Utah.

"This is the first time I knew; when I walked in here they just told me. Otherwise, I would've never known (I needed the N.C. license)," Signh said.

Like others caught off guard, Signh will have to return when he has more time.

A by-product of this new law, DMV officials say, is before more people come out to register their cars, even more will have to get in line for a state driver license.

"People need to know," Mancus said.

With September tags about to expire, the DMV expects long lines on Friday. Signh hopes fellow drivers learn their lesson from him and come prepared.
