CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Mecklenburg County's record rush to the polls ends Saturday, but probably not before almost 200,000 people will have taken advantage of early voting.

Lines were long at the early voting sites all day Friday, with waits of two hours or more in some cases.

“Like I say, we may be close to 40 percent of the vote totals here showed up already," said Michael Dickerson, the director of Mecklenburg County's Board of Elections.

By contrast, Dickerson said, the presidential election in 2004 only brought about 25 percent of registered voters to the polls early.

The early voting sites open again Saturday at 10 a.m. and will stay open until 5 p.m., four hours longer than originally planned.

Anyone in line at 5 will be allowed to vote.
