North Carolina Gubernatorial Candidates Debate Issues

RALEIGH, N.C. —

North Carolina's candidates for Governor met for a debate Tuesday night. Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue and Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory squared off about gangs, offshore drilling and other issues.

The pair debated at a Durham TV station. Perdue pointed to legislation that was recently passed to crack down on gangs. McCrory accused lawmakers of watering down that bill.

"They weakened it and it's inexcusable that we aren't moving quicker on this issue. And as governor, it'll be a major priority of mine." McCrory said in the Tuesday night debate.

Perdue responded with "The work that was done this past session is important first work, but it's just a first step. I believe you have to be tough on gangs and then smart on solutions."

The new, tougher gang law goes into effect the first of December.
