Some Surprises On Primary Day In Mecklenburg County
CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
A few Mecklenburg County races had surprising results in the primary.
Vilma Leake beat incumbent Norman Mitchell in the Mecklenburg County Commission District 2 Democratic race. Leake has served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education since 1997.
Mitchell has spent 10 years on the Board of Commissioners.
Nick Mackey, the Charlotte attorney who made an unsuccessful and controversial bid to become Mecklenburg County's sheriff late last year, beat out longtime Congressman Drew Saunders for the Democratic spot on the ballot for the N.C. House District 99 race.
Saunders has served six terms in the House of Representatives. He was the mayor of Huntersville prior to joining the General Assembly.
Mackey will face Republican Dempsey Miller in November.
