CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
One developer backs out, but the future of the old Eastland Mall property still remains unknown. The city has been looking for one to breathe new life into that huge chunk of east Charlotte, and Eyewitness News found out it is now down to one.
City Councilman James Mitchell told Eyewitness News there's still a lot of work to be done before a decision is made about what to do with the property. Leaders will be talking about that issue extensively during a committee meeting Thursday.
"I think city staff would like to give us a report about his financial plan, we need to hear how the citizens feel about the project," Mitchell said.
Eyewitness News spoke with one of the developers, Ark Group, on Wednesday afternoon. The Ark Group is also behind the NC Music Factory.Partner Noah Lazes said his group does not want to waste the council's time – that it rather council try out the other developer's idea first to see if it would work.Ark Group was picturing turning Eastland into an entertainment park with a ski slope, wave pool, Skateboard Park and a film studio component. That leaves the other developer, Studio Charlotte.Studio Charlotte has envisioned a straight movie studio campus, complete with sound stages, film school and housing.Mitchell said the committee will hear recommendations from the city staff about how to move forward. They will make a recommendation to Charlotte City Council on Aug. 26.
