CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Police in north Charlotte are still searching for a suspect in a late-night shooting on Durham Lane.
Police were called after someone heard shots fired around 11:30 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, a man was dead inside.
“I slept right through it, and didn't hear anything,” said Teresa Renfro, who lives up the street. “But it doesn't surprise me -- but it is shocking, and every day it gets a little bit worse.”
Renfro said this is the most recent example in a series of crimes that has plagued the community over the past several months.
Eyewitness News found that between May 13 of this year and May of last year, there were 14 residential burglaries, eight reports of vandalism, six counts of larceny, one armed robbery and one bust for manufacturing and selling marijuana. Burglaries and larceny were up from the same time period the previous year.
Parents like Bernadette Stitt said they see questionable activity in the neighborhood all the time and are concerned for the safety of their children.
“My daughter comes through here every day to go to school, and that’s 6:30 in the morning," Stitt said.
Police at this point have not said what may have been the motive behind the homicide.
