MONROE, N.C. —

Two men are behind bars after a high-speed chase ended with one of the men allegedly shooting at police.

Monroe Police arrested Brandon Alarcon and Daniel Miranda early Monday morning.

Police said two officers were responding to the report of shots fired near the intersection of McIntyre Road and Walkup Avenue early Sunday morning, when Officer Robert Hall noticed Miranda and Alarcon driving in the area.

Officer Hall tried to stop Miranda's car, but police said the suspects took off, leading Hall and another officer on a chase through the streets of Monroe.

"Obviously they were trying to get to an area where they could hide, and it didn't appear they were familiar with the area," said Major Brian Gilliard.

The chase ended when Miranda lost control while turning into an apartment complex off Sunset Avenue and crashed into a concrete sign.

Police said the two men bailed from the car and began running in different directions.

When Officer Hall tried to stop Brandon Alarcon, police said Alarcon shot at him with an assault rifle.

Officers discontinued the chase at that point due to safety concerns for nearby residents.

But detectives were able to trace the car to a local address, and with a tip from confidential information, investigators made an arrest Monday.

Police said they were still unsure of what Miranda and Alarcon were doing prior to the chase beginning, but Alarcon has a long criminal history, and is currently on probation for similar charges.

Alarcon and Miranda were booked into the Union County Jail.
