GASTON COUNTY, N.C. —

Two people escaped a burning home in Gaston County overnight.

The fire started just before 1 a.m. on Dallas Spencer Mountain Road.

Investigators said the homeowner was asleep and woke to the smell of smoke.

He felt the doorknob on a separate bedroom door and when he felt it was hot, he went ahead and opened the door.

The sudden rush of oxygen caused the fire to spread to the hallway.

No one was hurt.

The home suffered significant damage in the fire.
