Fatal crash shuts down I-85 southbound

Emergency responders are at the scene of a fatal accident on Interstate 85 South near Sam Wilson Road.

The southbound lanes had been closed for a couple hours due to the accident.

The left two lanes were reopened around 7:40 a.m.

Police said a tractor-trailer broke down in the far right lane.  The driver got out and put up warning cones.

Police said a driver of the rental truck did not see the broken down tractor-trailer and slammed into the back of the truck.

The driver of the rental truck died.  The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

Channel 9 has not received an update in his condition.

Cleanup crews were at the scene cleaning up the contents of the rental truck that spilled onto the roadway.
