Hours past a self-imposed deadline for action, the Senate passed legislation early New Year's Day to neutralize a fiscal cliff combination of across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that kicked in at midnight. The pre-dawn vote was a lopsided 89-8.
Senate passage set the stage for a final showdown in the House, where a vote was expected later Tuesday or perhaps Wednesday on the measure, which also raises tax rates on wealthy Americans.
Hundreds of partygoers come to Uptown for First Night
There were two changes to last night's First Night activities that affected thousands of people who came into Uptown to ring in the New Year.
The smell of a half dozen food trucks filled Tryon Street all day Monday, and hundreds of partygoers took advantage.
For the first time since First Night began, food trucks were allowed inside the perimeter to serve hungry families. Center City Partners said they wanted to help small businesses, while also capitalizing on the growing food truck craze.
Police are looking for the armed robbers who broke into a north Charlotte home and pushed around the couple, who are in their 80s, who live there.
John Houston and his wife, Delores, live on Vanderbilt Road. He served in World War II. They've been married and living in the same house ever since. They were there Sunday night, waiting for their daughter to stop by.
"She had called and told me she was on the way," John Houston said.
