Gastonia police say a mother left her daughter with mental disabilities handcuffed to a hotel bed while she was at a wedding reception.
It's a crime that has shocked hotel guests at the Courtyard Marriott.
An employee said the girl was found wandering around the hotel lost and alone. First hotel management tried to contact the mom, thinking maybe she had lost her daughter and was looking for her somewhere in the hotel. Then they found out she was at the wedding reception.
Tiffany Davis is now behind bars facing a neglect charge. Police say her 19-year-old daughter has the mental capability of a 4-year-old.
"It's unbelievable," Kip Boss said. "I just can't imagine that anybody would do that to a child."
Hotel guests Channel 9 talked to are sickened by the crime. Police say the mom left her daughter for hours.
"I'm just shocked," Denise Sines said. "I would never think of doing anything like that to go and enjoy myself."
Hotel workers found the girl. Then a manager walked her back to her room when they couldn't get in touch with her mother.
Police told Channel 9 that's where he found handcuffs and a dog leash hooked to the box spring. Employees say the girl walked right to them. Then they brought in the police.
"I'm glad they did something like that," Sines said.
"It's a shame that the hotel management has to be responsible for the child," Boss said. "Where is the parent? It's unbelievable."
Tonight, guests are praising the actions of the workers at this hotel, but are concerned for the girl's future. Sines couldn't believe any mother could leave behind a daughter who needs her.
"Never, I would never," Sines said. "I love my kids unconditionally and every mother should."
Channel 9 was told the daughter is doing OK. Davis is in jail on a $100,000 bond.
