A Charlotte family spent 10 years paying water bills fluctuating anywhere from $7 to more than a hundred only to find out their water meters had been crossed, but it was not until Action 9 stepped in that they finally started receiving the right bill.
Jodie and John Shaughnessy have had problems with fluctuating water bills ever since they moved into their condo 10 years ago. Some months the bills are as low as $7, but sometimes they are more than a $100.
"So it didn't seem normal for it to fluctuate that much," said Jodie Shaughnessy.
They have also paid what they thought was their bill only to have the water shut off for non-payment.
Jodie Shaughnessy found out her water meter is crossed with that of another unit. She just doesn't know which one. "We do not know for sure it could be one of them," said Jodie Shaughnessy.
She said over the years, they have complained to CMUD, which has admitted the meters are crossed and promised to investigate, but she said nothing ever happens.
How does it make her feel?
"Angry. I feel that's unacceptable. Any other business, if you have a complaint right away, they want to keep your business, so they are going to look into it and get back to you," she said.
So action 9 got in touch with CMUD. Right away they sent someone to uncross her meter.
Turns out Jodie had been paying the bill for the condo three doors up. CMUD said going forward she will be getting the right bill.
"I am just grateful, you guys were able to help us out," said Jodie.
