By Don Griffin
CONCORD, N.C. —
A plugged street drain has been flooding a Concord man’s driveway for years. He said he has tried everything to get the city to fix the problem. It wasn’t until he called Channel 9’s Don Griffin that he finally got action from the city.Rickie Julian showed Action 9 how his gravel driveway has been washing away for years.“The water is coming down here washing he out. I mean, I can’t stop it,” Julian said.Julian showed Action 9 photos of rain water pouring off the road in front of his house and running down his driveway.Julian showed Griffin how the drain pipe across the street is stopped up with dirt.So when the ditch fills us, the water has no place to go but across to Julian’s driveway.“They haven’t never took this drain up,” Julian said.Julian removed a drain grate from the other end of the stopped up pipe to show Action 9 the blockage. He said the city of Concord has graded the ditches, but he can’t persuade them to clear the blockages in pipes along his street.“I’ve been fighting them for years. They say ain’t nothing wrong,” Julian said. So, Griffin called the city of Concord’s public affairs manager. The city looked into it and finally showed up with heavy equipment to dig out the ditches. They also sucked out debris blocking the drain pipes and added dirt to Ricky’s driveway.“I couldn’t ever get nothing done with them. That’s why I called you,” Julian said.
