CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
When Carol Parks is not studying for classes in mental health, she’s a home health care worker.
The job requires her to be certified in CPR.
Last May, she took a CPR course through her former employer, Patriotic health Care, for $45.
“The very first payday after we took the class, they took the money out of our check. I didn’t get the card,” she said.
Parks said Patriotic Health Care told her they mailed her the CPR card, but she told them she never received it.
She said that’s when the company sent a second card to her brother, one of Patriotic’s patients.
Parks said she never received that card, either. To make matters worse, she could not convince Patriotic to send another card or refund her money, she said.
“Forty-five dollars is a week’s worth of groceries for me. That’s a tank of gas, you know. To some people, that’s not a lot of money. To me, it’s a lot of money,” Parks said.
Action 9 visited Patriotic’s offices near uptown Charlotte and met with the company’s spokeswoman, Denise Wilson.
“We have mailed the card out to her. She’s gotten the card out before and she keeps saying she never received the card,” Wilson said. “But every time we send a card out, the company has to pay for that card.”
Shortly after, Patriotic called Parks and asked her to pick up her tax forms at the company office. When she arrived, they handed her a new CPR card, too.
She said she is happy and glad to have proof she is CPR-certified.
