Action 9: Woman fights to have stolen check reissued

By Don Griffin

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A Charlotte woman could not get her money back after her insurance refund check was sent to the wrong person, so she turned to Action 9 to get the company to reissue the check.

Sheila Miller was the victim of a stolen identity. She said someone with her maiden name, Sheila Thornton, cashed her $2,250 insurance refund check.

“I was devastated really. I was like, wow, can someone really get away with this?” she asked.

Miller said the check was sent to the wrong address by National Foundation Life Insurance in 2003, but she did not find out until last October after she contacted the company to cash in her policy.

That is when the company sent her a copy of the canceled check.

“I looked at the signature and I know. No, definitely not me,” she said.

Miller said national sent her papers to fill out and return. Weeks passed and she would call the company only to talk to different people each time.

“It was just back and forth. Nothing happened, so I said, ‘Well, let me try Don Griffin,’” she said.

Action 9 sent National a letter and called their office.

The company said Miller signed a statement that she did not forge the check. Then it reissued her a new check for $2,250.

Miller has been out of work for seven months and she said the money would be put to good use.

“I got some bills I need to catch up on,” she said.
