CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
A woman said she was put through a nightmare after a local air duct cleaning company damaged her furnace. The company paid the nearly $500 repair bill. For five days, Tammi Stover said she had to use a space heater to stay warm. She said that was after an air duct cleaning company caused her furnace to stop working. "It blew all the debris and everything into the furnace which caused the pilot light to go out," said Stover. She said a technician for Quality Air also damaged a safety switch on her furnace and broke her thermostat trying to remove a part that wasn't removable. "He tried to use a screwdriver to dig it out," said Stover. Stover said Quality Air attempted to make repairs and blamed her old heating system, but finally they told her to select an HVAC repair service, which replaced the switch and the thermostat. The repairman wrote on the receipt that both parts were damaged by the air duct cleaning company. Quality Air paid the $427 bill. "I never had any problem with my system until these guys came out," said Stover. Action 9 called Quality Air, but their district manager declined to talk on camera. He blamed one of his subcontractors, who he said has since been fired. Quality Air is now offering Stover a free sanitizer treatment for her troubles. "It has been a nightmare, I just want this to be done so nobody else goes through what we went through," she said
The BBB said to protect oneself from these situations to hire only licensed HVAC contractors to clean your ducts.
