Eyewitness News is learning more about what led up to a fatal shooting in Union County. Saturday night, deputies were sent to Indian Trail, and they found a man dead in his front yard on West Street.
"It's just a tragedy," neighbor Desiree Simmerson said. "It's unreal. I'm just waiting for him to come out and start riding his bike and his skateboard."
Simmerson lives across the street, and she was home when she heard three gunshots. She rushed outside and saw her neighbor lying in his yard.
"I'm looking over there where he was lying," Simmerson said in tears.
Another neighbor gave CPR as they waited for the ambulance, but 27-year-old Chris Brown didn't make it.
"To watch them put the white sheet over somebody—you never want to do that," Simmerson said.
Investigators searched the home, looking for evidence and clues to what really happened. Investigators say a black car drove up and sat outside the home for some time. When Brown went to confront the occupants, someone shot him. He was struck multiple times.
Brown lived with his mother, but she wasn't home when Channel 9 stopped by Sunday.
Brown was more than just a neighbor for Simmerson. He was a big part of her son's life.
"Every day, religiously, he was out there riding bikes with him or out there skateboarding with him or fixing his skateboard for him," Simmerson said. "What am I going to tell my son when he asks for Chris?"
Investigators say the car was small and black with a distinctive bumblebee muffler. They have not released a suspect description or a motive, but they did tell Eyewitness News this wasn't random.
