Investigators with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said a woman lied about her daughter being kidnapped, leading to a statewide Amber Alert.
Mary Bowen told deputies Sunday night that Troy Koonce kidnapped her 3-year-old daughter outside a home in Lincolnton, according to the sheriff’s office. She said the incident happened because she refused to return to Washington, N.C., with Koonce, investigators said.
The sheriff’s office said further investigation determined that Koonce is listed as the father on the child's birth certificate.
Detective Lt. Tim Johnson said detectives will meet with the District Attorney to have the second-degree kidnapping warrant charging Koonce stricken from the records. Charges are also expected to be filed against Bowen, officials said.
