BOONE, N.C. —

Police are taking extra steps to keep college students safe after a Charlotte teen’s death.

Tyler Blalock’s friends said the 19-year-old had been drinking heavily before he was found dead in a creek at Appalachian State University last September, police said.

Since then, the Watauga Democrat reported officers in Boone have arrested more than 100 people for underage drinking.

Many used fake IDs, so last week officers held a seminar to train liquor store workers how to spot fakes.

Lynn Blalock said her son died from a large head wound after falling on a rock near the creek. She doesn't know what led him to fall.

Blalock graduated from North Mecklenburg High School and was studying the environment at Appalachian State University because he wanted to make it cleaner and safer.
